A fresh, warming essential oil can be obtained from the majestic evergreen Balsam Fir. Native to North America, the tree can grow to more than 24 metres tall and its branches are covered with needles. Throughout history, Indigenous peoples of America used it for ceremonial and wellness purposes. Today Balsam Fir is used primarily for paper pulp and construction. It does not tolerate the pollution typical of cities, so it is rarely found there, growing instead in forests where the air is fresh and clean. The oil’s main constituent, ß-Pinene, when applied topically as part of a soothing massage, offers an effective way to help calm the skin. Balsam Fir essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the tree’s bark, resulting in a characteristically fresh, woody aroma.
