The bitter orange trees needed to extract petitgrain essential oil grow in the central and eastern regions of Paraguay. Paraguay has been producing petitgrain essential oil for decades, so local producers possess all the knowledge required to distil high-quality essential oil. By sourcing petitgrain essential oil from Paraguay through the Co-Impact Sourcing initiative, we support the implementation of rural community development projects there and provide diversified income sources for smallholder farmers.
Petitgrain oil is extracted from the bitter orange tree. Three different essential oils are typically extracted from the same tree species: Petitgrain from the leaves and young branches of the tree; neroli from its flowers, and bitter orange essential oil from the outer peel of the fruit through cold pressing. However, due to timing considerations, the same tree cannot be used for the extraction of all three oils. This is why we source our petitgrain essential oil from Paraguay and neroli from Egypt.
Petitgrain is supplied to us by Paraguayan smallholder farmers who grow and harvest bitter orange trees on their own land and then distil the oil. Many growers do this work "on the side" – when they need some extra income (for tuition, for example), they harvest the necessary parts of the trees, produce the oil, and then sell it as supplemental income. The leaves and branches of the trees can be harvested twice a year, and the byproduct of distillation is repurposed as mulch for heating the distillation units or as animal feed.
